Parks Exhibition Center welcomes you to experience the annual IAA Visual Arts Theme Show, a highly anticipated showcase of the creativity and technical acumen of ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ Visual Arts students. Central to the excitement of the show, students vote on a theme that inspires the creation of artwork over several weeks. Theme Show entries are blindly reviewed (only seeing the artwork images and artist statement) by an outside arts professional who lends their expertise to curate the exhibition and also designates awards, which will be announced at the Opening Reception.

This year’s theme, as voted on first by Visual Arts faculty members and secondly by the students of the Visual Arts department, is “Nostalgia.” The students are directed to produce work that suits the proposed theme. Nostalgia is often defined as sentimental yearning for something, a place, a person, a thing, an event, etc. These works should bring back fond memories, elicit strong emotions, and spur conversations about our pasts.

This year’s juror, Teresa Flores, is a multidisciplinary artist who has shown internationally and her work has been featured in The New Yorker and NPR. Flores is known for her impactful social practice work that draws upon our memories of food, her Chicana identity, and how the colonialism of California has affected families like her own. She currently resides in East LA and is working with the LA Food Policy Council Food Leaders Lab 2024 and the LA Commons’ Ford Community as a Residency Artist. Learn more about Teresa Flores .
